The Steer of the Best Off Road Trails in Scotland
23 June 2016

Looking for the ultimate off road driving experience in Scotland? The country offers some of the world’s most striking scenery – from vast lochs to towering mountains and everything in between – providing challenging trails for even the most experienced off road enthusiast.

Read on to discover the trails we most recommend for off road driving in Scotland.

Perthshire Off-Road Driving Centre

Looking for mud, deep water, hills and thrills? If so, the Perthshire Off-Road Driving Centre in Glenfarg has it all. Set in 1,200 acres of spectacular terrain, the Perthshire Off-Road Driving Centre offers a variety of off road driving experiences for all drivers, from intermediate to experienced. Choose from 4x4 off road driving to learning how to reverse steer a Land Rover over rough terrain, or handle an 8x8 all-terrain vehicle, all against the backdrop of some of Scotland’s most stunning scenery. For the more experienced off road driver, you can take on The Challenge, and pit your driving skills against others as you compete in five driving events. The Scottish Off Road Driving Centre

The Scottish Off Road Driving Centre (SORDC), located just 10 miles from Perth, offers a good mix of purpose built training obstacles and challenging natural terrain. The centre promises lots of hair-raising descents and seemingly impossible ascents, along with plenty of deep water and lots of sticky mud. For the ultimate in off roading in Scotland, experienced 4x4 drivers will relish the chance to take on ‘Hangmans Hill’, which overlooks the Howe of Fife and Loch Leven, and offers a natural wilderness like no other. SORDC also offers professional workplace and industrial 4x4 driver training, group activities and a ‘Mad on Mud Club’, which gives 4x4 owners the chance to enjoy the off road areas and meet other drivers along the way. FarxFour

The FarxFour centres offer driver experiences and driver training for 4x4 novices, those looking to improve their skills, and those that drive off-road for work. For adventure seekers, FarxFour offers one-day trips that take you off the beaten track to enjoy forests and open moorland across the Scottish Borders, with many of the trails incorporating Forestry Commission land, for a truly wild experience. For those less experienced, try one of the FarxFour Experiences – choose from Safari, Experience or Taster, depending on your experience level and vehicle familiarity. FarxFour provides off road driving at sites in Perthshire, East Lothian and the Scottish Borders. Find out more at www.farxfour.com

Crieff Hydro

Once a sand and gravel quarry, the 4x4 driving experience at Crieff Hydro now offers a 40-acre all-terrain course through which you can wade, climb and traverse. The Crieff Hydro course takes about an hour to navigate and promises plenty of lumps, bumps and steep climbs. Take to a Land Rover or Polaris Ranger to pilot through secluded woodlands, steep inclines and muddy waters. The 4x4 experience is just part of the Highlands escape that makes up the Crieff Hydro estate, which also includes a hotel, spa and self-catering accommodation. Other activities offered include horse riding, archery, croquet and bush craft. Find out more at www.crieffhydro.com

Highland Offroad Located just outside the picturesque village of Dunkeld in Highland Perthshire, Highland Offroad offers drivers the chance to experience off-road driving in the latest Range Rover or Land Rover models, as you get to put these vehicles through their paces at Butterstone Loch. The facility is part of the Land Rover Experience Scotland, offering 150 miles of upland forest and moorland track, along with the chance to see some of Scotland’s most protected wildlife in its natural habitat. Alternatively, you can bring your own vehicle and learn new off-road driving techniques with the Highland Offroad instructors. Find out more at www.highlandoffroad.co.uk
